Valley Diabetes & Obesity Honored as Modesto Chamber of
Commerce Small Business of the Year
Modesto, CA (Feb. 9, 2023) – Valley Diabetes & Obesity announced today that it has been honored as
the Small Business of the Year by the Modesto Chamber of Commerce. The private independent medical
practice, focused on advanced diabetes management, was selected for its innovation, customer service
excellence, and successful initiatives helping build a healthier community in Central Valley, California.
Valley Diabetes & Obesity was founded by Dr. Gopika Gangupantula “Dr. G” (MD, DABOM, FAAFP, BCADM, CDCES), one of only 75 Diabetologists in the nation and the only one in Stanislaus and San Joaquin
Counties, and her husband, Sachin Gangupantula, its Director of Operations. The duo’s vision is to build a
Center of Excellence for Diabetes Care in Modesto.
Valley Diabetes & Obesity’s patient-first approach has helped improve access to quality, affordable
healthcare in and around Modesto. During the pandemic, the practice continued to deliver its innovative,
patient-centered approach to managing the diabetes and obesity epidemics that disproportionately impact
underserved communities in the U.S. According to the 2020 Stanislaus County Health Assessment,
Stanislaus County had a higher percentage of adults reporting diagnosis of diabetes than adults in
California as a whole, reaching a high of 14.2% in 2012‐2014. There is significant disparity in the percentage
of adults suffering from diabetes by income level. For example, from 2015‐2017, adults at or below 200%
of the federal poverty level were 86% more likely to have been diagnosed with diabetes.
“Valley Diabetes & Obesity is motivated to help the community live their healthiest lives. Delivering the best
Diabetes management care possible is Dr. Gangupantula’s passion,” said John Villines of the Modesto
Chamber of Commerce. “Dr. G thinks outside-the-box to deliver customized and comprehensive treatment
plans for her patients with empathy. Valley Diabetes & Obesity offers diabetes education, a support group
and a health coach, and the best diabetes medications and glucose monitoring devices on the market.
Drawn by her innovative practices and high-quality care, patients from as far as Merced and Sonora seek
her out for treatment.”
In addition to running her practice, Dr. Gangupantula has assisted Stanislaus County in setting up a
Diabetes Specialty clinic serving uninsured and Medicaid patients. She also assists in training providers
and residents in Diabetes treatment, management, and care as part of the Valley Consortium for Medical
Education Family Medicine Program at Doctor’s Medical Center Hospital. Through such partnerships, Dr.
G and Valley Diabetes & Obesity are helping build a healthier community by connecting patients to highquality health and wellness resources.
“I am honored to accept the Modesto Chamber of Commerce’s Small Business of the Year award on behalf
of the entire Valley Diabetes & Obesity team,” said Dr. Gangupantula. “It is a privilege to work with a
dedicated team every day to deliver much needed diabetes and obesity care to the Modesto community.
We are dedicated to alleviating the debilitating impact of obesity and diabetes here in the Central Valley,
and to building a stronger, healthier community together.”
“At Valley Diabetes & Obesity we are passionate about improving access to healthcare in underserved
communities and in using technology and innovation to deliver the greatest value based care to the entire
Central Valley,” said Sachin Gangupantula FACHE, Director of Operations. “We thank the Chamber of
Commerce for the recognition, and all of our partners across the region for their support, as we continue to
grow, serving a greater number of people in our community each year.”
